What Is a Chin Implant?

Also known as a chin augmentation, this surgery involves adding artificial implants to change the size or shape of the chin. Many patients desire a chin implant to provide them with a more prominent chin, reduce a receding chin, or restore the chin after an accident or illness.

To be a good candidate for a chin implant, you must first have enough skin to support one. You should also be in fairly good health, with no underlying conditions that would prohibit you from receiving anesthesia. Those who are happiest with their results have a positive attitude and a realistic expectation as to what they can accomplish through a chin augmentation.

Planning Your Chin Implant Surgery

We will take measurements of your chin and allow you to look at the various different implants to choose the right one. You will also be provided with a list of medications and supplements to avoid in the two-week period leading up to your surgery.

How Is a Chin Implant Performed?

By making a small pocket of tissue in your chin, which will hold the implant in place. Your inner tissues will be sewn together tightly to keep the implant secure and prevent it from shifting. Finally, Dr. Jean will stitch your outer skin closed using dissolvable stitches whenever possible. A chin implant takes between 60 and 90 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia.

What to Expect* after a Chin Implant

Immediately following surgery, your chin may look more pronounced than you had imagined. This is largely due to swelling and is completely normal. Over the next few days, the swelling will gradually go down, and you will then be able to view your final results.

What Procedures are Done Alongside Chin Augmentation?

There are several surgical and non-surgical treatment options that may be performed in conjunction with your chin augmentation. Examples include facelift or neck lift surgery or facial fat transfer. The transfer of fat cells may be done to accentuate areas like the cheeks, which should be in proportion to the chin for overall facial symmetry. During your consultation, you and your surgeon can discuss how your chin interacts with your other facial structures, how chin augmentation will impact the relationship of all of your facial contours, and how to perfect that.

Is a Chin Augmentation Obvious?

Initially, your chin may look slightly disproportionate after your implant procedure. This is due to post-operative swelling. Once this resolves, your new chin implant will enhance your facial shape in a way that looks very natural. You and your surgeon will have taken great care in selecting the most appropriate implant for your existing facial shape, so you can expect to love your new appearance soon after your chin implant surgery.

Does Chin Augmentation Change the Look of the Neck?

The overall sculpted appearance of your neck and chin can improve a great deal through chin implant surgery. With better contours at the center of the jawline, your double-chin may decrease in its apparent prominence. The angles of your jawline may also look generally sleeker and more sculpted.

How Long Does a Chin Implant Last?

The medical-grade silicone implant that is inserted to enhance the shape of your chin should last indefinitely. Over time, your broader facial shape may change to some degree as a result of your aging process. That said, these changes should have little impact on the appearance of your chin.

Can a Chin Implant Be Removed?

Yes. You may choose to have a chin implant removed at any time should you so desire. Some patients have their original chin implant replaced. Some have their implants removed but choose to enhance their chin shape using dermal fillers as a temporary alternative to the silicone implant. If you have a chin implant that no longer suits your face shape or lifestyle, or you have experienced complications, contact our office to discuss your options for revision. Recovering from a Chin Implant

Patients often notice itching, redness, and swelling near their incision site. These symptoms are normally rather mild, and should not interfere with your daily activities. Adding a moisturizing cream may help reduce dry skin and itchiness, and over-the-counter medication may also be used to alleviate swelling.

Your chin says a lot about you. If your chin isn’t making the right statement, perhaps it is time for augmentation. Call Main Line Plastic Surgery Text or Call to schedule your consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon today.
