What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the stomach and tightens the muscles. Depending on the extent of this procedure, the belly button may require some repositioning. A tummy tuck can help to regain your pre-pregnancy body or restore your contours after weight loss. It is one of the top five plastic surgeries that are performed in the U.S.

Types of Tummy Tuck

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck is a less-invasive version of abdominoplasty that focuses on the area below the belly button. It is best for women with minimal fat and loose skin in the lower stomach and pubic region. The mini tummy tuck tightens the tissues in that area but does not address any concerns above the belly button. However, it requires less recovery time than other types of abdominoplasty.

A regular or standard tummy tuck targets the upper and lower stomach (above and below the belly button). During this operation, excess skin and fat are removed, and abdominal muscles are tightened. The belly button is repositioned if needed. The surgeon may also place drains to prevent fluid buildup.

An extended tummy tuck covers the abdomen and love handles/flanks on the sides. It removes loose, hanging skin laterally and vertically for more comprehensive contouring. The incisions and muscle repair are more extensive compared to the regular tummy tuck procedure.

A fleur-de-lis tummy tuck removes excess skin above and below the belly button. It combines standard horizontal incisions in the lower abdomen with vertical ones across the upper stomach. This comprehensive approach contours the belly from hip to hip and top to bottom. The resulting incision pattern resembles the shape of a flower.

Plus-size abdominal contouring is customized for patients whose BMI is over 30. This surgical approach preserves blood flow and minimizes stress. Contouring may performed in multiple tummy tuck procedures over time for optimal safety and comfort. Although abdominal skin laxity can pose challenges, modern techniques make it possible to create a beautiful shape. Patients are closely monitored during the operation to ensure the best possible experience.

As the name implies, a drain-free tummy tuck is performed without fluid suction. Instead of placing tubing under the skin to remove liquid buildup, like in a traditional tummy tuck, progressive tension sutures are used to close dead space and prevent accumulation. Avoiding drains results in less pain, discomfort, and risk of infection during recovery. However, monitoring is still important to check for fluid buildup or seroma after surgery. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, a drain-free tummy tuck helps patients get back on their feet faster.

During your consultation with Dr. Jean, you may find that laser-assisted liposuction (SmartLipo®) is a better option for you. It eliminates excess fat with the added benefit of skin tightening because the laser’s heat promotes collagen production.

Preparation

Physical Exam and Planning

Dr. Jean will thoroughly examine your abdomen, discuss your goals for surgery, and evaluate excess skin, fat deposits, and separated muscles. Together, you will decide how much tissue needs to be removed for optimal cosmetic results and improved abdominal contour.
You will likely be instructed to stop taking certain supplements or drugs, such as ibuprofen and aspirin, a few weeks before surgery because they can increase bleeding risks.
To assess general health, a complete blood count, electrolyte panel, coagulation studies, and other tests will be performed.
If you are a smoker, it will be necessary to cease nicotine intake for at least 4 weeks before and after plastic surgery to avoid any additional risks.
You will be advised to ask a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24-48 hours following the operation. It is also helpful to have someone available during the first week to do things around the house. If you have small children, you will not be able to lift or care for them for several days, so it is best to arrange support for at least 7 days after your surgery.
You should also prepare your home for rehabilitation. Make some of your favorite meals and freeze them, so you will not have to worry about cooking. You must get extra pillows (2-3 to place behind your back and 1-2 under your knees) and fill any prescriptions Dr. Jean gives you beforehand. If your home has multiple floors, select the one to recover on and bring everything you need there, as it will be hard to go up and down stairs multiple times a day.

The Regular Tummy Tuck Surgery

Anesthesia

Tummy tucks are usually performed under general anesthesia. You will be completely asleep and pain-free during the procedure. However, Dr. Jean can also do a mini tummy tuck with local anesthesia. In this case, you will be awake but not see or feel anything related to the operation.
The surgeon will make a long horizontal incision just within or above the pubic area, as well as a circular incision around the belly button to access abdominal tissues.
Excess fat deposits will be removed from the middle and lower stomach through liposuction or direct surgical excision.
Separated abdominal muscles will be brought back together and sutured to create smoother, tighter contours.
Loose skin will be surgically removed from the middle and lower belly. The remaining skin will then be redraped over the new tummy shape.
Dr. Jean will carefully reposition the navel, pulling it through an incision in the newly tightened abdominal skin and tissues.
The main horizontal incision will be stitched closed. Temporary tubes may be placed under the skin to drain fluids after surgery. Steri-strips and dressings will be applied.

Immediate Post-Operative Care

Vital Signs

Your blood pressure, pulse, oxygenation levels, and respiration will be closely monitored for the first 24 hours after surgery to ensure that you are tolerating the procedure well.
Dr. Jean will provide IV fluids and medications, such as pain relievers, antibiotics, blood thinners, and anti-nausea drugs, to maximize comfort, speed healing, and reduce risks.
With assistance, you will be slowly helped out of bed and encouraged to walk short distances to start rehabilitation.

Recovery After Tummy Tuck Surgery

The first two weeks should be used for rest and healing. You will likely be able to return to work after 7-14 days, depending on the nature of your job. However, it is best to avoid rushing and take the time to make sure that all wounds are healed. Your full tummy tuck results will be visible 6 months after your plastic surgery when your body completely recovers.

Dr. Jean uses the Silagen® silicone incision strips to promote optimal rehabilitation. They retain moisture in the area and help to regulate collagen production — the natural protein in your body that strengthens your skin. These strips reduce the visibility of incision lines and are made of 100% silicone. We also use VitaMedica recovery support, a combination of vitamins and supplements that is designed to speed healing and decrease rehabilitation time after cosmetic surgery. Both Silagen® silicone strips and VitaMedica medication are provided as a part of your procedure at no extra charge.

We recommend wearing loose-fitting clothing that will not irritate the incision area or cause discomfort. For the first 1.5 months, you need to wear a compression garment or binder to help with swelling and bruising. Your tummy tuck scars will mature over time and become almost invisible. You will get your dream figure in nearly 6 months.

Candidates for a Tummy Tuck

Stable Weight

Weight fluctuations after a tummy tuck can stretch the abdominal muscles and skin, potentially compromising surgical results. For this reason, candidates should maintain a stable, near-ideal mass for at least 6-12 months before operation. If you are planning a significant weight loss, then it would be better to postpone surgery.

No Plans for Children

Idea candidates for a tummy tuck do not plan to have more kids, are fully recovered from childbirth (6 months after delivery), and are finished breastfeeding. This is important because your abdominal wall and muscles need time to heal after pregnancy. If you conceive a child after a tummy tuck, it will not affect your reproductive functions, but some of your cosmetic results can disappear. You may need additional procedures after the pregnancy to regain your optimal body.

Realistic Expectations

Patients must understand that this surgery has some limitations. A tummy tuck tightens abdominal muscles and removes excess skin and fat, but there are cases where perfect results cannot be achieved with this treatment. Luckily, remaining skin irregularities or asymmetry can be corrected through revision surgery or non-invasive treatments. We have many options to make your body look young and beautiful.

Benefits of Tummy Tuck

Removes Excess Skin

Abdominoplasty takes away loose skin that cannot be removed through diet and exercise alone. Dr. Jean will tighten and sculpt your belly, making it more fit. You will feel more confident and happy with your appearance after this procedure.
During pregnancy or significant weight changes, abdominal muscles can separate and weaken, causing the belly to protrude. This issue may affect women’s confidence and create discomfort. A tummy tuck brings these muscles back together and repairs areas of weakness, making the belly flatter and tighter. Abdominoplasty can also reduce back pain.
In addition to removing excess skin and fat, a tummy tuck improves the body’s natural contours. This surgery creates a smoother and more athletic abdominal profile. Clothing also fits better after the operation.
A tummy tuck can greatly boost self-confidence by creating a more contoured belly. Many patients experience a profound positive change in how they feel about their appearance after this procedure. They have higher self-esteem and confidence in all areas of life.
