What Is Hand Surgery?

Hand surgery is any procedure performed on the hands, wrists, or fingers to:

  • Correct deformities due to injury, birth defect, or disease
  • Reduce hand injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s contracture, or ganglion cysts
  • Fill in the backs of the hands, which may become thin and frail due to aging

Most of the hand procedures offered here at Main Line Plastic Surgery require only local anesthesia and allow for your immediate release from our surgical center.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Hand surgery might be right for you if:

  • You have been diagnosed with a hand injury
  • Your hands are disfigured and cause you a great deal of embarrassment
  • A loss of volume has caused your hands to age faster than the rest of your body

What Are the Different Types of Hand Surgery You Perform?

Hand surgeries are incredibly varied. A board-certified plastic surgeon with years of training and experience, Dr. Jean tailors hand surgeries to each situation. You may receive treatment for a deformity that you were born with, an injury, or other concerns. Some of the techniques that plastic surgeons use to repair defects include skin flaps, reduction, fixation, tendon repairs, cyst removal, and more. During your consultation, Dr. Jean will discuss the particular ways in which he may address your cosmetic and functional concerns.

Will My Insurance Cover Hand Surgery?

If your hand surgery is medically necessary, your procedure may be covered by your medical insurance. As you make plans to consult with a plastic surgeon regarding a hand defect or injury, it’s wise to contact your insurance company directly. Doing so, you’ll get to know what the provider may require in terms of documentation from your doctor to determine that your procedure is being done for functional, not cosmetic, reasons.

What Type of Anesthesia Will be Used?

Most hand surgeries can be performed using a local anesthetic. This technique allows you to remain awake during the procedure, though the doctor may also give you a sedative to help you relax. The use of local anesthesia carries fewer risks than general anesthesia. It reduces the amount of time you’ll need to spend at the surgery center and enables you to feel better sooner after surgery without compromising one bit of your comfort during the procedure.

Can Hand Surgery Help My Trigger Finger?

It’s possible that your trigger finger may be helped by surgery, yes. Doctors usually recommend medication, injections, and physical therapy before surgery. However, if these modalities do not improve the movement of the affected finger, surgery may be done to release the tendon that is “stuck”.

What if I Don’t Know What Hand Condition I Have?

To benefit from hand surgery, you don’t have to know what condition you have. All you need to know is that something doesn’t look or feel right. During your consultation with Dr. Jean, you may learn quite a lot about what is causing your primary complaint. He may order imaging to fully understand the nature of your defect or injury or may need to perform only a visual examination. From that, you can expect to receive a clear, accurate diagnosis as well as a concise treatment plan recommendation.

Planning Your Treatment

Keep in mind that your range of motion may be very limited following hand surgery. As such, you could need someone to help you perform everyday tasks, such as preparing meals, bathing, and getting dressed. If your job requires a great deal of repetitive motion, you may even need to take some time off from work.

How Is Hand Surgery Performed?

Each procedure is different and uniquely tailored to meet your own individual needs. Dr. Jean will discuss the exact procedure with you once he has come up with a treatment plan.

What to Expect* after Hand Surgery

You may not feel much different right after hand surgery. It normally takes some time for your hands to return to normal, particularly if your procedure involves any modifications to your tendons or ligaments. You should begin noticing some improvement within three to five days after surgery.

Recovering from Hand Surgery

You could need to wear a hand or wrist brace or limit certain motions. Some swelling and bruising is also to be expected and can be treated with ice and over-the-counter medication. More serious hand surgeries might require physical therapy before you can fully regain the use of your hand.
