What Is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift is a procedure that is similar to a facelift in that skin is smoothed and tightened. This procedure is often referred to as a forehead lift because it targets the skin on your forehead as well as the area in between your eyebrows.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Raymond D. Jean performs this procedure on an outpatient basis at either the Bryn Mawr Hospital Surgical Center or the Paoli Surgery Center.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Brow Lift?

You might want to consider a brow lift if you:

  • Are bothered by moderate-to-severe wrinkling on the brow or forehead
  • Would like to smooth forehead skin, but prefer not to have your muscles paralyzed as with BOTOX®
  • Have tried a series of dermal fillers to correct brow wrinkles in the past, and are now looking for a solution.

Patient Testimonial

“Approximately 8 months ago I had a FaceliftNeck Lift and Brow Lift with Dr. Jean. To say I am very pleased with my results is an understatement. I am 60 years old and my main concern was addressing my sagging face and neck before my daughter’s wedding. From my initial consultation to each follow up appointment, I couldn’t have had a better experience. Dr. Jean’s bedside manner, thoroughness and unparalleled skill throughout the entire process confirmed that I chose the best surgeon to perform my procedure. My scars faded nicely and are at this point barely visible. I look 10 years younger and my confidence is restored!”

Are Brow Lifts painful?

The treatment area will be numbed with local anesthetic, so you will not be in pain or discomfort during the procedure. It is typical to develop soreness, tightness, discomfort, or mild pain as you wake up and the anesthetic wears off. Most people are able to manage post-op pain with an over-the-counter pain reliever. You and Dr. Jean will discuss medication options for discomfort. Any soreness or discomfort should resolve completely within 1-2 weeks.

Are there any risks to a Brow Lift?

Like all surgical procedures, a brow lift does carry with it the risk of certain complications. You can mitigate these risks by choosing an experienced, qualified, trained facial surgeon like Dr. Raymond Jean, but risk can never be completely eliminated. Potential risks include:

  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Asymmetrical results
  • Change in the hairline
  • Numbness
  • Infection
  • Bleeding

Dr. Jean and our team work to reduce the risk of complications at all stages of the process. We make sure you are fully informed of the risks and know what you can do to prevent them. We are here for you every step of the way to make sure your experience is satisfactory and that we address your concerns.

Planning Your Brow Lift Surgery

“Approximately 8 months ago I had a Facelift, Neck Lift and Brow Lift with Dr. Jean. To say I am very pleased with my results is an understatement. How long does a brow lift procedure usually last?

The surgery typically lasts 1-2 hours. The duration will depend on whether the brow lift is combined with blepharoplasty or other procedures, as well as the specific steps taken in your procedure. We will provide you with the surgical duration as part of your consultation and the planning process. You will need to arrange for someone to bring you home from surgery and stay with you for at least 24 hours following.

How Is a Brow Lift Performed?

Dr. Jean will administer local anesthesia, which will numb the upper part of your face. We can also provide you with a sedative if you are uncomfortable being awake during your procedure. Incisions are made in your hairline, typically at the temple area, allowing Dr. Jean to pull sagging skin upward and trim away any excess. The incisions are then tightened with stitches, ensuring the skin on your forehead is as smooth and uplifted as possible.

What to Expect* after a Brow Lift

You may notice that your forehead feels “tight” and that your skin is stiff whenever you frown or crease your brow. This feeling will gradually resolve itself in about a week or so, which is approximately how long it will take for you to notice your final results.

Recovering from a Brow Lift

Take care not to pull on your stitches, and use an over-the-counter medication to help you alleviate any discomfort you may feel.

How long do Brow Lift results last?

The results of a brow lift are long-lasting! Many people feel great about their results even decades after the initial procedure. Although the results are lasting, a brow lift cannot stop the aging process or the continued effect of environmental factors like sun exposure and gravity. As the years pass, the skin on your brow and face will continue to age, which includes fine lines and loss of elasticity; however, your brow will continue to look firmer, smoother, and more lifted than it would have without surgery.

How can I maintain the results of my Brow Lift?

Maintaining your brow lift results is the same as caring for your skin generally:

  • Wear sunscreen
  • Wear hats with brims to protect your skin
  • Stay hydrated with plain water
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
  • Don’t smoke
  • Cleanse and moisturize your skin daily
  • Eat lots of vegetables and fruit, and avoid excessive added sugar

Can I combine a Brow Lift with other facial procedures?

Yes, it is sometimes possible to perform other procedures in the same appointment. There are several facial procedures with results that are highly complementary to a brow lift, including blepharoplasty and facelifts. The only way to know if it is safe and effective to combine the procedures is to visit Dr. Jean. He will first want to discuss your goals, review your health history, and examine your face before making any recommendations.
