What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover combines multiple cosmetic procedures to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy body. This complex operation is customized for each patient to address specific problem areas, such as the breasts, abdomen, waist, hips, and thighs. Mommy makeover procedures are typically performed in one surgery that takes 4-8 hours. The number and type of these procedures depend on each patient’s aesthetic goals. Our mommy makeover surgery helps women regain confidence in their bodies and always feel youthful and attractive.

CONSULTATION & PREPARATION FOR a Mommy Makeover

Mommy makeovers involve several procedures, some of which can be performed simultaneously, while others may require subsequent surgeries. During an in-depth consultation at our Bryn Mawr office, Dr. Jean explains what to expect from the operation and how to recover correctly. He also examines the patient’s anatomy and discusses their aesthetic goals to determine the correct combination of procedures to restore their figure. After this initial step, we transition to the preparation stage.

How To Get Ready Prior To a Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Patients can get their homes ready for a mommy makeover surgery in a few ways. Here are some tips:
Patients should make their favorite and most nutritious meals and freeze them in portions. This way, they won't have to worry about cooking — they can just heat pre-made food.
Patients must find someone who will help them during recovery. This includes driving home after surgery, picking up medications, and assisting with house chores.
Patients should also plan their childcare. For 1-2 weeks, they won’t be able to lift their kids or objects weighing more than 5-10 pounds.
Patients must prepare their “recovery room” at home with plenty of pillows and a table nearby to hold their drinks, medications, and plates of food. They should make sure that everything they need is located on just one floor of their house to avoid frequent trips up or down the stairs.

Mommy Makeover Procedures

Each woman’s body is unique, so her mommy makeover surgery is customized to suit her goals and address specific concerns. This combination surgery often involves two or more of the following procedures:
BREAST SURGERIES

Motherhood brings many changes to the breasts. After childbirth and breastfeeding, they may be left with significant sagging or a “deflated” look. Breast augmentation can be accomplished with breast implants such as saline, silicone, or “gummy bear” breast implants (a more functional version of silicone). We also offer fat transfer breast augmentation, which uses fat cells removed via liposuction from another part of the body to increase the size and shape of the breasts.
While breast augmentation can restore the fullness of a woman’s bosom, it won’t address any sagging. A breast lift is often included in a mommy makeover to treat the drooping of breasts, tighten the tissues, and reposition the areola and nipples.
A tummy tuck surgery or abdominoplasty is another common procedure included in a mommy makeover. It addresses loose abdominal muscles, sagging skin, and residual fat in the belly. Dr. Raymond Jean removes excess skin during this surgery and tightens abdominal muscles to provide a flatter stomach. He may also use liposuction to address the love handle area.
A mini tummy tuck is best for women with mild sagging, little fat, and no separation of the abdominal muscles. Recovery is quicker than a traditional tummy tuck. The mini-procedure can sometimes be performed under local anesthesia.
Dr. Jean offers two forms of liposuction: traditional and SmartLipo. We often recommend the second option, which provides additional skin-tightening effects (around 60% more than traditional lipo) by stimulating collagen and elastin production. The recovery process is typically faster, with less swelling and bruising.
Pregnancy (or massive weight loss) affects more than just the breasts and abdomen. Women may have loose skin and stubborn fat in many other places. An upper or lower body lift can treat these areas, including the arms, back, waist, buttocks, and thighs.
Significant weight loss and aging may lead to sagging skin and excess fat in the upper arms. Patients with such cosmetic problems can benefit from brachioplasty. This mommy makeover procedure removes the unwanted tissue from the upper arms, resulting in a more contoured appearance.

Recovery After a Mommy Makeover Surgery

The recovery period varies widely due to the many combinations of procedures that can be performed. Dr. Jean creates a custom surgical plan for each mommy makeover patient to suit their unique body and aesthetic goals. Here is an overview of a typical recovery after a standard surgery that contains a tummy tuck, breast procedures, and liposuction.

First 24 Hours
After waking up from general anesthesia, patients are monitored for some time and given medication to manage pain and prevent infection. They are then allowed to go home to rest and heal with maximum comfort. Patients usually need assistance standing up, walking, and performing other basic movements. Drainage tubes may also be placed to remove excess fluid from the surgical sites. Dr. Jean recommends walking short distances and moving very carefully to promote healing and circulation. After a tummy tuck, patients should stay slightly bent for some time to avoid putting pressure on the incisions.
Swelling and bruising reach their peak during the first week. Patients should increase mobility every day through short, gentle walks. Pain medication can help manage discomfort. Dr. Jean usually removes drainage tubes after 3 days. Patients must avoid wetting incisions while showering, and compression garments should be worn to reduce swelling.
Patients gradually feel less pain and soreness in the second and third weeks. The swelling continues to go down. Stitches dissolve or are removed after 10-14 days. Patients can usually return to work after 2 weeks, avoiding strenuous activity. Scars start fading but remain reddish.
After nearly six weeks of recovery, most patients resume their normal daily routines. Only residual swelling remains, which gradually resolves over the next several months. Comfort levels are significantly improved. Patients may return to more intense exercise that does not involve heavy lifting and core work. Final results can usually be seen after 6-12 months.

Candidates for a Mommy Makeover

Many mothers are good candidates for a mommy makeover procedure. However, we recommend following some guidelines to achieve the best results and preserve them for a long time. Mommy makeover procedures are excellent for women who are done having kids, have fully recovered from childbirth, and are no longer breastfeeding. This is because the body needs time to revert to its natural state, which includes restoring the normal placement of the abdominal muscles and decreasing breast size. Dr. Jean recommends waiting six months after pregnancy or breastfeeding for any procedures.
Another important requirement is good overall health. Women should not have complex disorders that may create severe surgical risks and interfere with anesthesia. It is best if patients do not smoke or quit nicotine consumption one month before the surgery.
What If There Are Plans for Another Child in the Future?
Having another child will not hurt, but it might reverse some of the mommy makeover results. The main goal of this surgical procedure is to restore a woman’s body — breasts, abdomen, thighs, and arms — to its pre-baby prime. That’s why we recommend this option for patients who do not plan to have more children.

Benefits of a Mommy Makeover

Refreshed Appearance

A mommy makeover provides a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance. Looking in the mirror and seeing smoother skin, fuller breasts, and a tighter tummy can make women feel younger than before having children. This refreshed appearance may have significant positive effects on their outlook, intimate life, and professional growth.

Improved
Self-Confidence

A mommy makeover can boost confidence and self-image. After pregnancy and breastfeeding, many women are left with sagging breasts, excess skin on the abdomen, and other physical changes they may feel self-conscious about. Cosmetic procedures like breast lifts, tummy tucks, and liposuction can restore pre-baby body contours. Feeling more comfortable and confident in one’s appearance often improves self-esteem.

Reclaimed Sense of Self

Motherhood involves many changes, both emotional and physical. While caring for a new child is rewarding, many women feel they lose their pre-baby identity. A mommy makeover allows them to reclaim their sense of self with procedures like breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and more. Feeling better on the outside can help women reconnect with who they are on the inside as well.
