Upper & Lower Body Lifts

Depending on the location of sagging skin, you may choose to have an upper or lower body lift. Upper body lifts often include the arms, back, chest, and waist. Lower body lifts target the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. Patients may sometimes choose to improve both regions in a full body lift.

The body surgery will be tailored to your exact needs. Dr. Raymond D. Jean will meet with you before treatment to decide which areas to include and which body lift techniques to use.

Is a Lower Body Lift Just a Tummy Tuck?

A lower body lift often includes abdominoplasty, better known as a tummy tuck. However, its scope is broader because it extends to the legs and other areas. This surgery may restore slimmer contours around your hips, flanks, buttocks, and thighs. Dr. Jean will tailor your lower body lift surgery during the initial consultation to suit your desired outcome.

What Cosmetic Concerns Can a Body Lift Improve?

At Main Line Plastic Surgery, body lift procedures are customized to your unique needs. There is no way to predict where and how much fat will be lost after a diet, exercise regime, or weight reduction surgery. Once patients lose their excess pounds, they often notice tissue laxity and other problems. Some of the cosmetic concerns that the body lift can address include:

Excess fat

Sagging skin

Uneven soft tissue

Stretch marks

Back rolls

Abdominal bulge or “shelf”

Separated abdominal muscles

Flat upper buttocks and saggy lower buttocks

How Do I Prepare for My Body Lift Surgery?

Your preparation for plastic surgery contributes to your safest procedure and most satisfying surgical outcome. After the initial consultation, you’ll receive detailed instructions about what you should and shouldn’t do and when to begin various lifestyle modifications. For instance, you may be advised regarding the following:

Body Lift Procedure

1 - Markings

Before your body lift, Dr. Jean will mark the incision spots on pre-determined areas of your skin. This step is necessary to guide the surgery in the right direction and achieve the best results.
The procedure will be performed under general anesthesia, and you will wake up once it is complete. Our anesthesiologist will monitor your vital signs throughout surgery and adjust the medications to ensure smooth transitions in and out of the state of unconsciousness.
Dr. Jean will make incisions around the torso, thighs, buttocks, or arms, depending on which areas are being treated. The length, pattern, and placement of these cuts vary for each patient. The incisions allow the surgeon to address all problematic regions.
Dr. Jean may tighten separated abdominal muscles with sutures to achieve a smoother, firmer contour. This condition often occurs after pregnancy and dramatic weight loss. However, not all patients need muscle tightening.
Dr. Jean will use a scalpel, surgical scissors, and other specialized instruments to remove excess skin and fat. Liposuction may supplement this process. The remaining skin will then be redraped over the newly contoured areas, and any excess tissue will be surgically excised (cut away).
Once the desired contours and smooth appearance are achieved, Dr. Jean will carefully close the incisions with sutures, surgical tape, or skin adhesives. Drains may be placed to prevent fluid buildup. The treated areas will be wrapped in dressings and compression garments to facilitate optimal healing.

Body Lift Recovery

We recommend scheduling a week or two off work if possible so you can focus on full recovery. Once home, you may resume light activity, such as gentle walks, to prevent blood clots. This should be done carefully to avoid putting pressure on the incision sites. You can expect pain, swelling, and drainage from the incisions for 2-3 weeks. The first few days after a body lift require a lot of bed rest. You may need assistance standing, walking, bathing, and performing other daily activities. Dr. Jean discourages strenuous physical movements until the end of the initial healing period, which often takes four to six weeks.
After six weeks of recovery, you can resume light exercise but must avoid heavy lifting and movements that strain the incisions for 2-3 months. Complete healing takes up to a year. You should also wear a compression garment as directed by Dr. Jean. He will monitor your recovery during follow-up visits and help you achieve the best cosmetic results.

How Much Pain Will I Be in After My Body Lift?

The level of discomfort after your body lift depends on your pain tolerance. If you’ve had other surgeries and felt only mild to moderate aches, you can expect the recovery to be easier. If your pain threshold is lower, the early healing period may be more intense. Fortunately, discomfort is at its highest in the two days after surgery. Beyond that point, you can expect to feel progressively better. You may be able to switch to over-the-counter pain relief after just one week of healing.

Am I a Candidate for a Body Lift?

Weight loss that has left behind loose skin is not the only qualification for a body lift. It’s important to thoroughly understand the procedure before choosing plastic surgery. You will also need to ensure you’re in good health. The following factors can determine body lift candidacy as well:

You’re at a stable, healthy weight

Fluctuating body mass may negatively affect your surgical outcomes
For optimal results, you’ll need to be recovered and able to keep weight off in the long term
A body lift may help your confidence and self-esteem, but you shouldn’t expect it to solve all your problems
You will need to refrain from certain activities to heal properly
If you have medical complications or recently underwent bariatric surgery, Dr. Jean may need to discuss your body lift with your general practitioner and other pertinent healthcare providers to ensure that the procedure can be performed safely and effectively.
