What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new contour. A plastic surgeon makes incisions around the areola, in the crease under the breast, and vertically down from the areola to the bottom of the breast. Excess skin is removed, and breast tissue is shifted to a higher position on the chest. The remaining skin is then tightened to create a firmer, youthful shape. While this operation does not significantly change the size of the breasts, it can make them appear fuller and more proportional to the rest of the body.

Breast lifts are often combined with other procedures, such as breast augmentation surgery. Adding breast implants during a lift makes it possible to both change the shape and add volume. Dr. Jean helps our patients decide whether this is a good option.

Breast Lift Recovery

The recovery period typically lasts several weeks. Most patients can return to normal activities in 48-72hrs. Pain and discomfort are usually minimal and prescription pain medicine if needed is only taken for a few days. Most patients return to desk work within a few days, but more strenuous activities should be avoided for 2-4 weeks. It may take a few months to see the final results.

The incision sites will likely be a little sore and possibly bruised or swollen for the first 7-14 days. All stitches are dissolving and do not need to be removed. No drainage tubes are used. It is important to avoid straining the incisions until they are fully healed. Post operative treatment to minimize scarring is provided to each patient. Breast lift incisions will gradually become less visible within a year after surgery.

Dr. Jean provides detailed instructions on post procedure care and activity restrictions. Follow-up appointments help to monitor healing progress and ensure that everything is going well.

Candidates for Breast Lift Surgery

Ideal candidates for a breast lift have the following characteristics:

Good Skin Elasticity

Elastic skin can conform to the new breast shape and is less likely to appear loose or uneven afterward.  The lift may have longer-lasting results for patients with good skin elasticity.

Breast Ptosis

Ptosis refers to sagging or drooping of the breasts due to pregnancy, weight loss, aging, or other factors. Women with this condition are ideal candidates if they want their breasts to have a more youthful, perky shape. The lift can remove excess skin and raise the breast mound higher on the chest. This surgery is the best way to make sagging breasts look beautiful again.

Asymmetric Breasts

Breast lifts are often performed to correct asymmetry. This surgery can make breasts more proportional by reshaping and resizing them. Breast lifts may be coupled with implants to improve symmetry.

Benefits of Breast Lift

Improved Breast Shape and Position

This surgery will reshape the breasts and lift them to a higher position on the chest. Excess sagging skin will be removed, and the remaining breast tissue will have a more youthful contour. Our patients feel that their breasts look firmer, more proportional, and more attractive after a lift.

As breasts sag over time, many women have trouble finding tops, bras, swimsuits, and dresses that fit properly. Lifting the breasts makes clothes look better on the body. Women also have the option of going bra-less after a breast lift.

Our patients become more confident when breasts have better shape, size, and position on the chest. Their posture may improve, clothes fit better and they feel more comfortable with their breasts. This renewed body image can improve their quality of life. This can be achieved with minimal downtime because breast lift is an outpatient procedure with a rapid recovery.
