What Is a Thigh Lift?

A thigh lift is a cosmetic procedure in which excess skin is removed from the thighs to decrease their size and reduce sagging. It may be performed on the inner thighs to create a “thigh gap,” or on the outer areas to eliminate saddle bags and achieve a more shapely appearance. The surgery takes about 2-4 hours on average. It is sometimes done along with other body contouring procedures to address multiple concerns at the same time.

Consultation &
Preparation for
Thigh Lift

Before a thigh lift, patients meet with Dr. Jean to discuss their goals and expectations. They undergo a full medical evaluation, including lab tests, to ensure that they are eligible for surgery. Clearance from a primary care physician is also requested. Patients are instructed to stop taking certain medications and supplements that may interfere with anesthesia or increase bleeding risks. The night before surgery, they should not eat or drink anything after midnight.
A thigh lift can make standing for an extended period difficult. So, patients must plan for some time off from work and ask someone to help them around the house. Arrangements should also be made for transportation after surgery, as anesthesia causes drowsiness and impairs judgment, making driving unsafe.

Thigh Lift Procedure

Dr. Jean measures both thighs to determine how much fat and extra skin should be removed from each one. He may also delineate those areas with a marker for surgical guidance.

Anesthesia

We use general anesthesia to make sure that the patient is comfortable. The anesthesiologist provides intravenous medications to induce a state of unconsciousness before the surgery begins. The patient is continuously monitored throughout the procedure.

Incisions

Dr. Jean makes incisions in the groin area to access the regions with excess skin and fat. The length and pattern of the openings depend on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. Incisions can go around the back of the thigh or down to the upper inner thigh. The resulting scars are usually well hidden by underwear, swimsuits, or shorts.

Contouring

After making the incisions, the surgeon elevates and separates the skin from the underlying tissues. The unwanted fat deposits are then removed. The remaining skin is pulled taut, and any excess tissue is trimmed away. This procedure helps to achieve a smooth thigh profile.

Closing incisions

Once the desired contour is created, Dr. Jean closes the incisions with sutures and may place temporary drains. Steri-Strips® or bandages are applied to protect the sealed incisions as they start healing. Depending on the extent of correction needed, the overall procedure time ranges from 2 to 4 hours.

Recovery After Thigh Lift Surgery

The main goal of recovery is to allow the incisions to heal. Patients must take at least 7 days off work and avoid strenuous activity for 6 weeks. There will be some swelling, bruising, and mild pain during the initial healing period, but we will prescribe medication to alleviate these symptoms. Compression garments are worn for up to 6 weeks to help reduce symptoms.
Patients can resume non-impact exercise after 3 weeks, while vigorous activities should wait for at least one month after the operation. Complete healing takes 2-3 months on average. Following the surgeon’s instructions for incision care and attending all follow-up appointments is crucial during the recovery period.

Candidates for Thigh Lift

Many people have disproportionately heavy thighs that often become even larger through exercise. Others frequently experience chafing because their thighs rub together whenever they walk. Such individuals can benefit from this surgery and improve their quality of life. Here are the main characteristics of good candidates for a thigh lift:
People who have lost a significant amount of weight and have excess sagging skin in the thigh region
Patients with skin laxity and fat deposits in their inner and outer thighs that cause a dimpled appearance
Individuals who have undergone bariatric surgery, leaving them with loose thigh skin
People who have a genetic predisposition towards storing fat in the thighs and buttocks
Patients should be physically and mentally prepared for surgery and understand all aspects of the procedure beforehand. They must also have realistic expectations and be in overall good health without serious medical conditions that can impair healing.
