The SMAS lift is an advanced facelift technique that specifically addresses the lower two thirds of the facial region. By targeting the support layers of facial tissue, the SMAS facelift can achieve effective, long-lasting facial rejuvenation results.
The superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) is one of the most important facial support structures. It consists of a tissue layer that occurs within the deep inner layers of the skin. Dr. Jean is able to achieve beautiful, natural looking results that take years off of your appearance by addressing the SMAS layer during a facelift.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Jean will evaluate your signs of aging and listen carefully to your aesthetic goals in order to determine whether this technique is right for you. Give us a call at 484-222-0010 to learn more about your options.
What Can a SMAS Facelift Address?
The SMAS facelift is an effective way to correct the lost skin elasticity in the SMAS membrane that often results in sagging cheeks, jowls and the appearance of a double chin. During the procedure, muscles are tightened, and excess skin and fat are removed in order to address the following signs of aging:
- Hollow cheeks
- Sagging in the middle portion of your face
- Sagging cheek fat
- Nasolabial folds (lines extending from your nose to the corners of your mouth)
- Loose skin and fat beneath the chin and jawline
- Jowls in the neck region
Am I a Candidate for a SMAS Facelift?
Ideal candidates for a SMAS facelift:
- Are in good overall health
- Have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure
- Are older than 50
- Experience facial sagging, but maintain at least some skin elasticity
- Would like to correct one or more of the signs of aging discussed above
- Don’t smoke or are willing to quit prior to surgery and throughout the recovery period (smoking can negatively impact healing and final results)
Your SMAS Facelift Procedure
The SMAS facelift is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, and it may take several hours. It is less invasive than a traditional facelift and as a result, your recovery time will be shorter.
Dr. Jean will place an incision along your temple and above the hairline, extending along the natural creases of your skin and curving behind the ears. This incision technique will ensure your scar is discreetly hidden beneath the hairline and within the natural creases of your skin. Once the incision is made, Dr. Jean will lift and reposition the tissue and muscle beneath the skin in the middle to lower portion of the face and the neck. Excess skin is eliminated and the remaining skin is tightened for a more youthful appearance.
You may experience some mild bruising, swelling and discomfort after your SMAS facelift. This will gradually subside during the first few weeks of your recovery. Most people are able to resume normal activities and return to work within 2-3 weeks. However, you will need to wait until you are fully healed to resume strenuous exercise.
